Description: 1920's vintage Wooden Ship Model American Destroyer WICKES/CLEMSON class DD 75-347 1/1200 scale: 1” = 100’ This is a another model of a US Destroyer of the WICKES/CLEMSON class built from 1917 to 1922. They are also known as “Flush Decker”, “Four Piper” “Four Stackers” and “1200 tonners”. There were 111 WICKES class and 156 CLEMSON class built. They were a follow up of the previous CALDWELL class of 6 similar style Destroyers. There were 50 ships authorized under the Naval Appropriations Act of 1916, with an additional 217 built on the General Board recommendation. The WICKES class were built under the War-Emergency Act, and a few ships served in World War 1. The USS WARD was built in 17 ½ days, a record at the time. The main difference between WICKES and CLEMSON was the adding of additional fuel bunkerage to increase their cruising range. There were differences between individual ships based on modifications and construction yard builds. Some (14) were completed as Destroyer Minelayers in 1920, a few others had twin 4” guns or 5” singles. So many were built that they exceeded the US Navy Post-war needs. Many were put in mothballs, and as in service ships wore out, they were scrapped and another re-activated in their place starting in the 1930’s. Seven ships were sunk in the Honda Point Disaster in 1923 due to a navigation error. Ships were converted to other needs as newer designs came into effect, such as minelayers, minesweepers, seaplane tenders, fast troop transports, and other needs that had to be fulfilled. Several served in the Coast Guard during the Rum Wars, and 50 were transferred to Great Britain under Lend-Lease, some serving in the Canadian and Soviet Navies. One was salvaged, and served in the Japanese Navy. USS WARD (DD-139) fired the “First shot” at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, sinking a Japanese miniature submarine. The destroyers served in many theaters, including as front line units in the Asiatic Fleet. Thirty-six were lost, including WARD, during World War II. This model is of a generic WICKES/CLEMSON class circa 1920’s as built. She was 314 feet long, 30 feet wide and of 1,154 tons displacement, and was capable of speeds up to 35 knots. These ships were armed with four 4”guns, one 3” AA gun and twelve 21” torpedo tubes. She had a crew of 100 seamen and officers This model was built by an unknown modeler as part of a large collection of like models. I believe these were made in the 1920’s in the United Kingdom based on the box the collection was housed in, the other models in the collection, and that some of the named models in the collection were scrapped starting in 1930. The ship model is hand painted and detailed and sold as is, with minor repairs such as straightening masts only. This model is in 1/1200 scale and is approximately 3” long. This is a Medium Grey colour model. This is a waterline hull version and comes painted. These are highly detailed scale models made for the Adult collector.
