Description: Stunning 1.229kg Victorian sterling silver Colonial horse racing trophy in the form of a rose bowl and relating to Singapore Races held in May 1890. The silver bowl bears a semi wrythen-fluted design in repousse style. To one side of the bowl has been engraved a family crest, presumably that of the trophy winner, Major P.H. Hammond. The engraved presentation inscription to the front reads: "SINGAPORE, MAY 1890. THE MAIDEN PLATE Won by Major Hammond's "Pahong" Internally the rose bowl is gold gilded as is the metal mesh covering to the bowl. The bowl comes complete with its original green painted metal liner which would allow the bowl to display roses and contain any moisture. The trophy also comes complete with its large, heavy (2.098 kg) ebonised wooden plinth. Finally, to reinforce the Colonial military connection to the trophy, it comes complete with its original moulded carrying case in typical "Campaign" style in solid wood with brass fittings; these fittings include carrying handles, decorations to each edge and a plaque to the top engraved "P.H. HAMMOND". Internally, the carrying case is fitted out in green baize, in excellent condition. Sterling Silver Bowl (excluding grill & liner): Weight: 1.229 kg. Height: 170 mm. Diameter of rim: 290 mm. Diameter of base: 150 mm. Hall Mark: London 1890. Maker's Mark: Army & Navy Cooperative Society Ltd (Frederick Bradford Macrea). Ebonised Wooden Plinth: Weight: 2.098 kg. Height: 90 mm. Diameter of base: 265 mm. Major P.H. Hammond: My research has discovered that Major Hammond was in the Royal Artillery and was Deputy Assistant Adjutant General. He departed Singapore shortly after winning the trophy in November 1890. Summary: As can be seen from the photos this is a stunning example of a Victorian Colonial horse racing trophy package with all its original elements intact. The Campaign Style carrying case alone will be worth a few hundred pounds. Good luck! NOTE RE POSTING: Due to the size & weight of the package I will post using ParcelForce 48. I am happy to post worldwide but I can only do so using the Global Shipping Programme & I cannot post personally.
