Description: Certified shipwreck silver! This Spanish 8 Reales silver coin was recovered from the Consolación shipwreck. A delay in retrieving their coins from the Postosí mint prevented the Santa Maria de la Consolación from sailing out with the rest of its armada. When pirates threatened the Consolación, the captain decided to ground her on Isla de Muerto. During the effort to ground the ship, the vessel hit a reef and had to be evacuated as it was taking on water. To prevent stealing of Spanish assets, the captain decided to intentionally set the ship on fire- destroying the ship and most items on board.
