Description: 1818 Large cent, Coronet, NGC authenticated / graded / encapsulated as Uncirculated - details, for cleaning. This cent, with the characteristic circular obverse die break looping all the way around the rim area, matched the description of the coins from the Randall Hoard. After the Civil War, a man named Randall found about 5,000 buried large cents dated 1817-1825, and had them brokered for sale. Many were red uncirculated, but time has changed the color part. The dealers who first consigned these cleaned them all in the 19th century before selling - which might explain the NGC grade for this one. We cannot prove the provenance that this specimen is from the hoard - in fact, last century they were finally dispersed to individual buyers so no one can - but as the 2014 PCGS article by Mr. Sherman declares, if you have a large cent of this period and it is uncirculated, it is likely from the Randall hoard. As an added attraction, the reverse is rotated just a couple of degrees counterclockwise. For a coin that got marred by cleaning, this is premium specimen, and is a sensible way to represent this year of coinage!
