Letter reads ; ( transcribed to the best of my ability) Washington DC September 14, 1862 dear friends as you wished I thought that I would let you know my whereabouts here near now on the campgrounds a little out of the city we picked up our things Wednesday night at 1:20 o’clock and started the next morning at 7 o’clock and arrived in the Washington this morning, took a bite and then started out here, which is about 2 miles the boys are all well as usual I had a bad headache for 24 hours cause by riding in the cars and not having any sleep there is 200,000 of us in and about the capital you cannot have any idea how things look out here you you hat the repast at the rebels, here within 4 miles of the city, but they have not been quite so near, nor they are not likely to be. When we got to Philadelphia, we had a great reception and a supper about 9 o’clock in the evening, and stopped overnight in the depot, but the people all through.— — the people are all rebels, and in Baltimore. It was good deal the same the same expected a row there and marched through the city with 11 rounds of cartridges but we was not troubled.
