Description: As the inaugural Morgan silver dollar edition, 1878 came struck with a Reverse of 1878 hub featuring 8 tail feathers. Later that year, a hub modification led to the Rev of 79 subtype with just 7 feathers on the eagle, and a flat-topped arrowhead. Far scarcer than the 8TF variety, the 7 Tailfeathers 1878 accounts for about 1 in 5 examples struck that premiere year at the Philadelphia Mint. Finding any toned survivor from over 43 million coins produced is difficult. This reserve housed for decades, allowing dark patina to spread across both sides. Some light cleaning is mentioned by NGC on the old green label holder. Yet strong dark toning has revitalized , providing wonderful visual depth on this historic first-year Morgan. Despite the Genuine grade, securing early tailfeather varieties remains popular with collectors.
