Description: [CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS, SEA LIFE, SEA ANEMONES] ANDRES, Angelo (Section Author) "ACCADEMIA DEI LINCEI" Memoire - Serie Terza – (14) 1883 Rome. Salviucci. 1883. First issue. Quarto (8.75 in x 11.5 in). 709 pp. Bound in blue-green publishers cloth with gilt titles. Ex-Libris 'California Institute of Technology' with their bookplates on pastedown, and stamps of either 'Engineering Library ' or ' Mathematics Library ' to lower edges. Embossed stamp to some title pages. Overall, very good. This volume features Angelo Andres 'Catalog & Descriptive Bibliography of Actiniidae' (substantially, the classification of Sea Anemones). ANDRES' STUDY & DESCRIPTIVE IMAGERY OF BURROWING ANEMONES WAS THE FIRST ACCURATE STUDY OF THIS GENUS TO APPEAR IN A SCIENTIFIC WORK. There are no fewer than 13 color, chromolithographs (including the incredible double page example) of anemones and other sea floor life; most of which was seen here for the first time for these 'burrowing' anemones. A rare work and especially rare in commerce. We believe this is the only copy to be traced at auction or online in any form in the last 30+ years. A true prize for the fan of sea life or of 19th century scientific descriptive illustration. Provenance: We acquired deaccessioned scientific periodicals from the California Institute of Technology (CIT) in Pasadena, California. For about the last 15 -20 years, Cal Tech has endeavored to reduce the footprint (and associated expense) of their library periodical stacks and replace the physical holdings with digital access for their students and researchers. In so doing, they have released nearly 100 years of physical scientific journals, magazines and valuable reference material. Please email any questions Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
