Description: Ticket issued for a benefit game to be played at the Boston Base Ball Grounds on Monday, November 2, 1891 to honor Joe Hornung, one of the greatest fielders in all of the 19th Century. The lettering on the front of the ticket reads "Grand Benefit Game Complimentary to Joseph Hornung." Hornung was the Boston Beaneaters (Red Caps) star outfielder from 1881 to 1888 after which he played one season with the Baltimore Orioles and New York Giants. This benefit game was organized to honor Hornung shortly after his 1890 retirement from baseball. An outstanding outfielder, Hornung led all NL outfielders in fielding percentage in 1881, 1882, 1883 and 1886, fielding as high as .948 at a time fielders did not wear gloves. Hornung would earn his nickname, “Ubbo Ubbo” from his habit of shouting out “ubbo ubbo” whenever he made a hit or good fielding play. The ticket (3-7/8 x 1-13/16 inches) displays evident wear and a chipped upper-left corner. In Fair condition overall. 19th Century game tickets are few and far between especially for a game played in honor of one of that era’s best ball players.
