Description: Description: Museum worthy, American folk art miniature Greek dowry chest inscribed 1912 and a Silver Scapular Icon dated 1880, both the chest and icon descended 3 to 5 generations in the Javo Family, Atlanta, Georgia. Most prominent on the front are the two highly detailed busts of the young Greek bride and groom. They extend ¾ of an inch from the chest and are carved in one piece with the posts, not applied. A vase with vines and flowers, decorated with inset blue stones, is also on the front framed within a zig zag molding. The pull for the lid is a carved bone flower, and the original brass lock is marked “Winchester.”The domed chest has a dovetailed frame on 4 bracket feet. The skirt is carved with scrolls and a center fan, bold zig zag moldings and borders also frame folk carvings of a rooster and horse on opposite ends. Domed lid carved from one piece of wood. All the carvings are in relief. The lid features a Greek Orthodox flag and an American flag flanking a Greek Orthodox two-headed eagle with spread wings and a lion carved in a crest or shield. The eagles wear a traditional miter with a cross on top, small pieces of jewelry are inset on each side of the eagle heads. A bright blue banner hangs from an arrow that nearly spans the length of the lid. Carved in is a name, I believe. The 112-year-old chest is completely original and untouched, with original oxidized painted surface. It is quite rare for a chest to survive with its original surface and patina. The icon is 140-years-old.Dimensions: Chest - Width - 11.5” Height - 5.75” Width 4” Heads carved .75” from chestIcon - 2.25” X 1.35”Date: Carved in, 1912Origin: American - GreekProvenance: According to Greg Javo, the chest was made for a bride and groom.
