Description: Pair (2) June 1912 checks from the St. Francois County Railroad Company in Farmington Missouri. Ornate vignette of a St. Francois County Interurban Electric Powered Rail Car. Each is signed by the railroad general manager, William R. Taylor. One check is made out to Western Electric Company. Each check has a spindle hole with tears radiating out from it as business papers were frequently put on pointed spindles during this time period. Please see scans for condition. The St. Francois County Electric Railway was formed in March of 1901 and the first self-powered electric rail car made its first run on July 24, 1904. The unfinished railroad had come under new ownership in February of 1904 and the name was simplified to The St. Francois County Railway. St. Francois County is southwest of St. Louis Missouri, in what is called the lead belt, due to the numerous lead mines in that region. The railroad connected with the mines, businesses, a state hospital, and several local towns. The railroad was headquartered in Farmington Missouri and the line ran to Esther, De Lassus, Hurryville, Columbia Junction, Gossom, Koen, McDaniel, Woodland, Knauss, Ash Landing, Hunt Whitener, Potosi Road, Clardy, and Powerhouse. The railroad ended operations at the end of 1957.
