Bryan Jr. was a Chinese Lawyer who had practiced law in Shanghai until 1951, when he was arrested by the Communist police on allegations of being a spy. He is noted as having survived being tortured, attempted indoctrination, and starvation at the hands of his captors for sixteen months, before being freed, and telling his story upon his return to the United States.
