Description: ORIGINAL 1949 DONALD STOLTENBERG (1927-2016) SOCIAL REALIST URBAN TENEMENTS PAINTINGThis is a wonderful original. Recently I acquired a small collection of early Abstract Expressionist works by Donald Stoltenberg. For those not familiar with the artist I have included his biography below. In doing research and seeing his works from his estate, I learned, that though he is most often associated with his mentor Raymond Loewy, his early work was massively influenced by his teacher at the Institute of Design in Chicago, Emerson Woelffer (1914-2003). Stoltenberg studied 'Visual Fundamentals' with Woeffler in the Spring of 1949 and his early work in the 1950s shows the incredible influence he had on him. This work is incredibly indicative of that influence in the color and composition. Though this one is a sort of social realist urban scene you can see where the artist's color work is heading. And if you check the other works I am offering in my store you can see how he eventually went far into the abstract world. Oil on paper board measuring 20 x 15 inches. Signed and dated lower right. Painting is in very good condition. There are a few issues that I want to point out. Along the lower left edge you can see a slight skimming of the paper. Upper left corner is a bit dented and shows some minor paint loss as well. Within the body of the painting there are a few spots of painting layer loss but it is hard to tell which small ones are intentional and which ones are a little bit of painting loss. Because the ones you notice really just add a bit of ruggedness to the Social Realism Urban landscape scene. Really a stunning original painting. I actually was thinking about adding this painting to my personal collection but really dont have the space. What I did to make sure the painting stays preserved, I had it archival hinged at the back top to backing with a slim paper frame built up as sort of a recessed pocket for it to sit in. Then I added an archival matte of white with black inner border to cover up the little edge problems and make it ready for a frame. I also have the matte measuring 24 x 18 inches so it is ready to put in any standard frame you would like. Really just a stunning original post war painting. Very much like a Gregorio Prestopino social realist painting. If you collect the artist's work or excellent Abstract Expressionist works, check my store for the other I am offering. He attended public grade school in Chicago, and High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Visual Design Art from the Institute of Design of the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1953. In 1960, he set up an art studio on Commercial Wharf, a former fishing pier on the Boston waterfront where he became a full-time painter. This location would inspire his lifelong love for and dedication to marine art, with a focus on both sailing and steam powered coastal and ocean vessels, most notably, the classic ocean liners of the 20th century. For the next decade he would focus on honing his craft, painting a variety of subjects, nautical and otherwise, in an abstract expressionist style. In 1962, Stoltenberg was named Visiting Critic for the famed Rhode Island School of Design. From 1957-1974, he taught collography at the noted DeCordova Museum School in Lincoln, Massachusetts, specializing in oil painting, watercolor and printmaking technique.
