Description: Original portrait painting of famous Philadelphia artist Arthur Beecher Carles (1882-1952). It appears as though Carles sat for this portrait sometime around 1950. Quite possibly at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he previously studied and later taught. There is another painting of Carles from the same sitting, which is listed on ebay by my friend. He is wearing the same clothes as well as the protective arms sleeves used by artists. He is in the same pose, but at a different angle. This would imply that he was sitting for 2 or more artists in a single setting, perhaps an art class, or a private session for multiple artists. Carles died in 1952 at the age of 70, not long after this painting was done. Oil on canvas. Illegibly faintly signed or inscribed on the reverse. Stretcher has a label from W.O. Bender Framing of Philadelphia. Measures 28" x 24". Framed size 31 1/4" x 27 1/4". Fair condition. Canvas has a puncture in upper right background area, areas of loose paint along bottom, and surface abrasion, but face is undamaged. Although the artist is unknown, this is a nice quality painting by a well trained hand. Based on the fact that this painting as well as the other painting featuring the same sitter both came out of the Philadelphia area, and both have Philadelphia framing gallery labels, it can be safely assumed that it is by a Philadelphia artist and possibly a PAFA (Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts) artist. I have included photos above of the other painting from the same sitting, as well as a photo of Carles in 1946.
