Description: Incredible Antique Chess Set. Victorian Chessboard is from the mid-1800s. Measures 18x15 when open and has 1.7" squares. The Board Frank Camaratta's Chess Antiques website currently has a matching, slightly smaller board of this style for sale for $695. Here's what he has to say about it: "A Victorian Folding Backgammon and Chess Board with inlaid geometric embellishments. One side of the board/box has the standard 64 squares for Chess and Draughts. The obverse has inlaid points for Backgammon. The chessboard squares and Backgammon Points are Sycamore and Rosewood veneer with inlaid delimiters in a solid Mahogany frame ...This Folding game box was designed to accommodate a set of Pre-Staunton chess pieces ... Based on the direction of the fold in the chessboard indicates a late-Victorian production, since the fold is in the correct direction."The PiecesI purchased this set with a fine set of St. George Chessmen. The Kings stand a hair over 4" tall. The dark pieces are ebony and miraculously have NO CHIPS that I can see. This is remarkable as ebony is prone to chipping and I've never seen a St. George set that was so clean. The pieces fit perfectly on the folding board. It also comes with a matching set of draughts for playing checkers and backgammon. Also a perfect fit for the board and matches the chessmen quite well. This is a complete, authentic Victorian gaming set! All in all this is just an incredible antique chess set for any chess or backgammon collector, or lover of fine antiques and craftsmanship. Sold as-is with no returns so please see pictures and ask questions! Thank you!
