Description: Up for sale is this beautiful antique print from Volume I of "Picturesque America", a two-volume set of books describing and illustrating the scenery of America that grew out of an earlier series in "Appleton's Journal", a magazine edited by Romantic poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant. The essays and images contained in these books provided great "armchair travel" back when so many Americans would never venture very far from home. For us, 150 years later, they provide a great view of what our favorite places looked like in the late nineteenth century. The engravings are based on the paintings of some of the best American landscape painters of the nineteenth century: unspoiled and pastoral scenes, plus views of commerce, ports, architecture, and natural treasures. Each engraving has been matted in a pH-neutral mat measuring 11" x 14", for ease of framing inexpensively in standard-sized frames. All are in very good condition, with some age toning to the paper and occasionally a spot or water stain in the margin area; please see photos. Most are signed in the plate.
