Description: This listing is for an original antique early 1900’s Western Electric Model 298A compact Telephone in decent condition. Estate find from an old massive house in Newport RI. The phone was still wired and connected to the other telephones and servant alert bells/phones in the house when I got it. We carefully removed it from the wall. It’s dusty but appears to be complete with all the inner parts and wiring, however I have no idea if it still actually works so I’m selling it as is Untested. The front mouthpiece part is marked on the front with a little metal plate “323 PAT IN USA JAN 14 1913” and on the backside is marked “PROPERTY OF THE AMERICAN BELL TELEPHONE COMPANY.” On the back side of the wood box it is marked “SPL TYPE 293 A”. It has a switch on the bottom side and a hand crank and 3 buttons on the right side. The phone is quite heavy weighing about 8.5lbs. The wood box measures approximately 9” inches tall by 6.5” inches wide by 4.5” inches deep. Plus the hand crank and listening piece that add about 4” inches and the mouthpiece adds another 4” inches. It does have some minor condition issues such as a crack in the wood on the top of the front door panel. Also I don’t have the original tiny key to lock the door in place but it’s a very simple mechanism. Please See Pictures for more details as that is the exact item that you will receive.
