Description: This offering is for a WHEEL THROWN BOWL by DAVID SALK in a design motif that represents a basket in clay with a nicely decorated rim with Iron Oxide and a vibrant red center. The Native American group represented is the Papago tribe in Arizona. It is 2 inches high and 8 1/4 inches in diameter. It is dated 2003 and is in perfect condition with no chips or cracks. The red glaze is a high gloss one. David Salk is the nephew of Jonas Salk who developed the Polio vaccine and his parents were physicians on a Navaho Reservation where he grew up. This exposure imbued an intense interest in Native American pottery and basketry design. He is very accomplished in re-creating both in clay for many different tribes and he is represented by several museums including the Smithsonian (I have also included some additional photos of some future and current listings by F. Carlton Ball, David Stewart, David Cuzick, David Leach, Tatsuzo Shimaoka and William Chappelow.) (C - 466)
