From a master of contemporary fantasy comes a novel of imaginative power unlike any you’ve ever read before. In A GAME OF THRONES, George R.R. Martin has created a genuine masterpiece, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill the pages of this magnificent saga, the first volume in an epic series sure to delight fantasy fans everywhere . . . A GAME OF THRONES . . . Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister forces are massing beyond the kingdom's protective Wall. To the south, the king's powers are failing: his most trusted advisor dead under mysterious circumstances and his enemies emerging from the shadows of the throne. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the frozen land they were born to. Now Lord Eddard Stark is reluctantly summoned to serve as the king's new Hand, an appointment that threatens to sunder not only his family but the kingdom itself . . . Sweeping from a harsh land of cold to a summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, A GAME OF THRONES tells a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards who come together in a time of grim omens. Here, an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal, a tribe of fierce wildings carry men off into madness, a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne, a child is lost in the twilight between life and death, and a determined woman undertakes a treacherous journey to protect all she holds dear. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, allies and enemies, the fate of the Starks hangs perilously in the balance, as each side endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones . . . Unparalleled in scope and execution, A GAME OF THRONES is one of those rare reading experiences that catch you up from the opening pages, won't let you go until the end, and leave you yearning for more . . . " From the rear flap of the dust jacket: " . . . George R.R. Martin is the award-winning author of five novels, including FEVRE DREAM and THE ARMAGEDDON RAG. For the last ten years, he has been a screenwriter for feature films and television and was a writer-producer of the TV series 'BEAUTY AND THE BEAST' as well as story editor editor of 'The Twilight Zone.' After a ten-year hiatus, he hs now returned to writing novels full-time and is presently at work on A DANCE WITH DRAGONS, the second book of 'A Song of Ice and Fire.' . . . " From the rear panel of the dust jacket: Praise for: A GAME OF THRONES “Grabs hold and won’t let go. It’s brilliant.” -- Robert Jordan. “Such a splendid tale and such a fantistorical! I read my eyes out.” -- Anne McCaffrey. “George R.R. Martin is one of our very best science fiction writers, and this is one of his very best books.” -- Raymond E. Feist. "It is perhaps the best of the epic fantasies -- readable and realistic." -- Marion Zimmer Bradley. "George Martin is assuredly a new master craftsman in the guild of heroic fantasy." -- Katharine Kerr. "Offers the rich tapestry that the very best fantasy demands. Few created worlds are as imaginative and diverse. George R.R. Martin is to be applauded." -- Janny Wurts. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Condition: An ABOUT FINE book in a NEAR FINE (better) dust jacket in a FINE slipcase. The book is tight and square in its black quarter-cloth and black boards binding. This may be unread copy of this book. The book feels unread. The upper and lower edges of the spine of the book both have a small “push”, as is sometimes the case, but here the "push" is less noticeable than is usually encountered, and the edges of the spine of the book have no tears; unusual, thus. There is no writing in the book (except for George R.R. Martin’s signature on a card that has been affixed to the half-title page); no bookplates; no remainder marks (important in that this book does show up with a remainder mark at times). The corners are sharp. There is no readers' crease or waviness to the spine of the book; again, an unread copy. The dust jacket is NOT price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $21.95. There are no chips or tears to the dust jacket. One should keep in mind that the silver foil dust jacket on 1st edition copies of A GAME OF THRONES usually shows up in worn, torn, rubbed, and overall poor condition; that is not the case here; a much better dust jacket than is normally found. The book (and dust jacket, of course) is safely enclosed in a custom-made slipcase that fits this 1st edition of A GAME OF THRONES. Photos of the slipcase are included in this listing. The great and famous dust jacket artwork is by the great fantasy artist Tom Hallman. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT MODERN FANTASY FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF “A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE” 1st EDITIONS AND/OR AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF A 1st EDITION OF THE ORIGINAL NOVEL THAT THE FAMOUS HBO SERIES, "A Game of Thrones" TELEVISION SERIES WAS BASED ON AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF GEORGE R.R. MARTIN 1st EDITIONS! _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my "catalogue" of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to "give" these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you're looking for a particular title or titles. See my other auctions on EBAY for excellent science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions (and a few other items). I specialize in science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions: award winners, cornerstone books, and generally recognized important books in the genre(s). I GUARANTEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK; IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, SEND IT BACK! If you prefer payment methods other than PayPal (as I do), I am happy to arrange for a different payment method for you. Before you buy from others, check out their return policies and their guarantees and compare them to mine. I stand behind all of my items FULLY. Why deal with a seller who won't guarantee their books, doesn't have a return policy, or doesn't correctly describe the edition or condition of their book(s)?
