Description: MARVEL COMICS "A Must-Have for the COMICS fans, TOY fans, CARTOON fans, and MOVIE fans of GI JOE, TRANSFORMERS and especially fans of both!". From their earliest days of enlisting Marvel Comics to use the medium to create universes for the characters featured in their newest toy lines -- GI JOE: A Real American Hero in 1982 and The Transformers in 1984-- HASBRO TOYS had the vision and the desire to unite the two properties like co-existing entities. But while both toy lines had similar marketing strategies as well as terrific overlap in terms of their fans and consumers, integrating GI JOE and The Transformers franchises to any substantial legitimate degree would take decades. On the toy side of things, Hasbro's first successful attempt didn't happen until 2011, when the company began testing the waters via their San Diego Comic-Con exclusives that featured "Transforming" GI JOE vehicles. This early initiative lead to 2022's Transformers Collaborative line which was launched in celebrate the 40th anniversary of GI JOE: ARAH. But the comic books and their related TV cartoons created the narrative surrounding the toys, especially before either franchise became feature length live-action films, and Marvel's two Hasbro-related series each steered their own course -- until 1986. GI JOE and the Transformers, a four-issue limited series, marked the moment that Hasbro got its wish, as the title featured the historic FIRST MEETING and CROSSOVER of the two huge toy lines. It was a meeting, however, that was afterwards ignored in the GI JOE: A Real American Hero ongoing series, and only marginally acknowledged in The Transformers. Nevertheless, it set a precedent for a concept that would be revisited in several crossover series from the different publishers that picked up Hasbro's licensing after Marvel's term ended in 1994. As with Marvel, later publishers launched their Hasbro series as two distinct entities, then made attempts to marry them at some point down the road. This approach was never met with the intended success, and when IDW Publishing completed the 12 years of its contract with Hasbro, the baton fell to Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment. Beginning with the June 2023 launch of Robert Kirkman's Void Rivals #1 and its surprise revelation that it marked the beginning of an all-new SHARED Hasbro Universe, the mistakes of the past would no longer be revisited. This same approach was mirrored in Hasbro's concurrent release of its latest Transformers film, Rise of The Beasts. The film, considered a soft reboot of the larger Transformers franchise, would launch the shared "Energon Universe." On film and on the comics page, GI JOE and Transformers will now occupy the same space, with strong narrative ties that will unite both properties like never before. What began at Marvel in 1986 has now come to fruition, and the significance of GI JOE and the Transformers -- to comics, to toys, to film and to legions of fans old and new -- cannot be overstated.
