The Ottoman sulpat Abdulmecid I invited rug weavers from Sivas to Hereke in 1841 to produce rugs for his palace. Sivas has been a major center for rug production since the 19th century, and its rugs are known for their beauty, craftsmanship, and cultural significance. Sivas rugs are based on Hereke carpet traditions and patterns. Hereke rugs are known for their precision double knots -Turkish or Ghiordes knots, which allow for clear patterns, and their harmonious color combinations. They can be made from wool on cotton, camel hair on cotton, silk on cotton, or silk on silk. Features: The rug is Signed HEREKE in the very corner as a proof of it's authenticity, see photos. There is an old crumpled peeled off fabric Original Label, partially unreadable, #306520, reads: Origin: Not readable. Type, hardly readable: Wool On Cotton, Size: 272 x 22 = 60.4, Color: Kir, Design: Sivas. In the lower portion I see only letters: 7268, and the rest is not readable. It is hand-knotted in Türkiye of hand combed, hand-spun and naturally dyed wool, which keeps lanolin, and features a medium very dense pile with tight high knot density of 300-400 kpsi. This legendary Hereke rug features highly detailed whimsical allover multiple floral medallions design in red, all shades of blue, white/off-white, pink, gray-blue, yellow, greens and more over an rich deep background encompassed with multiple borders - just gorgeous!.
