Description: GANDHI SIGNS LESS THAN 2 MONTHS BEFORE INDIA'S INDEPENDENCE, AND ONLY MONTHS BEFORE HIS TRAGIC ASSASSINATION Legendary Indian political leader known for his non-violent style of protest MAHATMA GANDHI exceptionally scarce authentic DOUBLE-SIGNED autograph photo dated June 24, 1947, on the eve of India's momentous independence. Gandhi signs his name in both English and his native Gujarati on the mount. Gandhi adds, "New Delhi 24-6-47" in his hand below the two signatures. The photo is captioned (in French), "Mahatma Gandhi who fought for independence for his country all his life." A mere 7 months later, Gandhi, the foremost leader in the movement for India's independence from British rule, would be gunned down at the hands of a right-wing extremist. The Gandhi signed photo is accompanied by two informative letters from his personal secretary (translated from Guajarati to English) stating: "Bhangi Colony / New Delhi / India / 5.4.47 Dear Mons. Sawyer-Paillard,Mahatma Gandhi has received your letter and the photograph on which you require his countersignature. He regrets that it is not possible for him to oblige you because he never gives his autograph without receiving something for the cause of the "Harijians" which he has hoped for a long time, you have to pay six Swiss francs for the autograph. I hope you understand how impossible it is to sign the photographs without something." ...and in subsequent response to the requested donation: "Bhangi Colony / New Delhi / India / 24.6.47 Dear Mons. Sawyer-Paillard,Thank you very much for your letter from 30.V.47 which I have just received.I had kept the other photograph - so I am sending you alltwo, signed as you wanted, by Mahatma Gandhi.Thank you for the money you were kind enough to send me.I am changed no less!
