Description: Bright cotton fabrics decorated by means of engraved copper plates, popularly called toiles, were widely in demand in Europe and America in the second half of the 18th century. These pictorial cottons featured fine details but were limited to one color. The designs depicted a range of subjects from floral or chinoiserie styles to political topics to genre scenes to mythological tales, fables, and popular literature. The pattern on this pitcher is adapted from Tomb of Rousseau, a fanciful French toile (ca.1800) in the Museum's collection. Dishwasher and microwave safe.
