This is due to the fact that we are situated on the eastern edge of the Chihuahuan Desert. Our winters are generally mild and pleasant, but temperatures can sometimes get down to freezing or below for brief periods. Only the hardiest and most adapted strains of Moringa oleifera do best here. We have been growing Moringa oleifera here for over 35 years. During this time we evaluated many strains of M. oleifera to determine which varieties were most adapted to our harsh growing conditions. In the course of doing so we ended up with two distinct varieties, the STX-1, and the STX-2. Both varieties are organically-grown right here in the USA. STX-1 is an indigenous landrace non-GMO strain which is quite cold-hardy, heat and drought tolerant, fast-growing, and very productive. STX-1 concentrates most of its energy into leaf production, and less on flowering and pod production. Flowering can take up to two or more years to begin.Since STX-1 produces produces very few pods, leaf production is heavy and continuous. Pod production is low with short, thick pods under 20 inches in length.If you are looking for a strong producer of leaf, then STX-1 is what you want. STX-1 will also tolerate increased soil moisture and can be grown in areas with colder winters than STX-2. In South Texas STX-1 withstood 25 degrees with minimal damage while STX-2 was decimated. STX-1 resists cold, heat, drought, excess soil moisture, and wind better than PKM-1 and STX-2.STX-1 is a very long-lived strain of Moringa. We have had trees that lived over 25 years here in South Texas even after years of severe drought and heat with multiple winters of frost and freezes! This is the first year we are offering USA Organically Grown seed of Moringa oleifera STX-1in limited amounts. GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: Fill a pot with a good quality potting mix with a coarse texture and excellent drainage. Do not use a seed-starting mix, as it holds too much moisture. Plant the seeds 3/4- 1 inch deep and keep the soil damp, but not at all wet in a VERY WARM, brightly-lit location. Wet or cold soil will rot the seeds. DO NOT PRE-SOAK THE SEEDS PRIOR TO PLANTING AS THIS WILL ALSO ROT THE SEEDS AND PREVENT SPROUTING! Water the seedlings only as needed and DO NOT OVER-WATER! Excess watering is the enemy of moringa! If Moringa STX-1 seeds are planted in cool/cold and wet soil, they can be subject to rot and then will not sprout. They require very warm/hot temperatures, lightly damp soil, and bright sunlight to properly germinate. IMPORTANT: We are the ONLY certified producers of STX-1 and the sole source of the pure strain, which we developed.
