Launched in 1938, the QE first began service in World War II as a troop ship and did not enter cruise service until 1946. Along with sister ship the RMS Queen Mary (QM), it was one of the most luxurious ships of its day. In 1969, Cunard launched the Queen Elizabeth II and retired both the QE and the QM. After a series of sales, the QM caught fire in Hong Kong in 1972 and was scrapped in 1973.
