Seiko’s intent was to launch a more practical, purpose built. The 5 tenants of the Seiko 5 badge would include: an automatic movement, some level of water resistance, a durable case, a day/date function at the 3 o’clock and a recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position. The Seiko 5 badge would be implemented across a number of different case styles, from simple stainless steel to dressy gold plated, all the way to purpose built rally and dive watches. The 5 models would also be offered within a great number of movement lines as well(Cal.51, 61, 62, 66, 70, 76, including their contemporary counterparts), but would always follow the “5” design principles. This particular example is a no-fuss stainless steel model. It polka-dot minuet track it very mid century modern, and along with the silver sunburst dial give the watch a distinctly 60s look. The 5126 movement may well be the best non-chronograph movement when considering Seiko 5 models. The 51 has a fully integrated auto winding system and was used in the Presmatic line which was pushed to 8 beats a second - that’s a very versatile train indeed. This particular example performs very well and is in excellent condition. The case has a good amount of dings and scratches but the crystal is new and it really has a grammar of design appeal.This is an excellent watch for everyday wear. It’s simple, utilitarian has automatic winding and a day/date function, yet has just enough style that it can easily be dressed up or down. The sizing is quite standard for the late 60s, yet the acrylic, box dome crystal give the watch some additional height, its not the biggest or smallest of the vintage seiko, a real sweet spot.
