In submitting the manuscript of THE SEARCHERS to Harper & Brothers, ALAN LE MAY wrote: "I decided to write a story of my own, and see if I could get it the way I wanted it; because I had a story I wanted to tell. It took a year and a half to get the answer. . .. Here it is, the best I can do." Back in 1928 when Alan Le May had launched a series of adventure tales which were to find annual publication between 1927 and 1937, the New York Times said: "There is fine writing in this novel (Old Father of Waters) and an even finer observation, and the results should be long memorable for its sheer beauty and emotional impressiveness. "The Times and other papers and magazines both here and in London "rediscovered" Alan Le May year after year in such terms as, "He writes like an angel" (The New Yorker); "A tale as vivid and as gripping as any devotee of Conrad could desire" (New York World). Then, for sixteen years, excepting for one western parody published in 1943, Le May gave up full-length fiction. He brought his total of screen plays to nineteen, and compiled a record of smooth-paper magazine acceptances second only to Kathleen Noris. For seven years his writing abetted his income as a rancher (and then it took him four years to write his way out of debt after a natural disaster wiped out his livestock). As a writer, as a student of frontier history and Indian lore, as a rancher and a descendant of pioneers, Le May has gained a close understanding of the theme of this, the novel he always wanted to write: quite simply, the theme has to do with a special kind of courage.
