US Spanish American War Cavalry 45 70 Cartridge Belt Modified .38 Double Loops.

Description: For sale here is a hard to find US Spanish American War Cavalry Belt. The belt is maker marked Mills & Orndorff and has a final patent date of September 11, 1894. The belt is made of dark navy blue canvas and features a simple one side belt hook buckle made of brass and 8 grommets made of brass that would appear to be for suspenders. The brass hardware shows age and patina. The dark blue canvas shows soiling, age, wear, some fading, and some outer rubbing. The back of the inside of the belt is marked 38 or 3S in white paint. I have seen another one of these marked as 30 caliber, but the 40 single large loops seem to fit the 45 70 round a little better and seem a bit loose on 30 caliber rounds. The double looped .38 slots are a depot modification meant to hold 12 rounds on each side of the belt. The .38 loops were made by Mills and added to Cavalry belts at Army Depots. These particular .38 loops are riveted in place with steel rivets. All 16 of these added steel rivets show old rust to the front and back. All of the loops on this belt show wear consistent with rubbing and general use. The worst wear is to the lower outer loops of the .38 sections. I haven't tried to add rounds to these 38 loops, and a couple of them may be fragile. Overall, this is in good worn condition. This is a rare belt to find in any condition, and this one should display very well.Please see my other eBay store at Cadencemiltaria2 for more great items.
