Description: This is an important, very rare, top quality Japanese Satsuma tea set made by Kitamura Yaichiro, and a once in a life time opportunity to own it. The set was made in the late 19th century, ca. 1880-1890. Kitamura Yaichiro (1868-1912) was the master potter of Meiji Japan, and went to study in 1902, in France, learning Western ceramics. The set has a royal Satsuma design that is highly sought after by collectors, and all pieces are identically signed. The set includes a teapot with lid, 5 cups, 5 saucers, 4 plates, 1 covered sugar, and 1 covered creamer. All are handmade and have intricate hand painted details that showcase the stunning Japanese craftsmanship. The cups on the inside bottoms have women dressed in robes. The set is heavy with gold and the 3 lids are adorned with gold, mouth open, and teeth showing, dragon heads. The tea spout is a dragon head with neck and curling toes. The handle is his tail with the two back feet. The set came from a wealthy estate, and I purchased it from that sale. It has been well-preserved over the years. It is a beautiful and unique addition to any collection and a testament to the rich culture of Japan, but especially the fine work of the master Kitamura Yaichiro. All measurements are approximate. Each saucer is 5 3/8" in diameter. Each cup stands 1 7/8" in height. Covered sugar and creamer are 5 1/4" in height. Each biscuit or cookie plate is 7 1/4" in diameter. Tea pot stands 6 1/2" in height. One cup has an old repair to the handle, shown in an enlarged picture with arrows pointing to the repair. The cup insides have some staining, some more than others. There is staining inside the tea pot, creamer, and sugar. There appears to be some age crazing, but it is under the glaze. I cannot feel it. I see no other repairs on any piece. Gold trim has very light wear around the rims. I did not find any chips and I didn't see any cracks. If I missed something, I am sorry. Please remember measurements are approximate. Returns are accepted only if I have not accurately described the item. Again, I may have missed a tiny chip, but not a reason for a return, but I don't think I did. Pictures are a part of the description. Pictures are not enhanced in any way and taken in natural sunlight. Feedback is a two way street. You leave feedback for me and I will leave feedback for you.
