Description: Vintage 1980s Kalapana 'Hawaii's Volcano Meets the Sea' Postcard Unposted 1985 This striking postcard is a powerful snapshot in time. The photo was taken in 1985 near the small fishing village of Kalapana just five years before the town was destroyed by a volcanic eruption. It is from Hawaiian Resources Co. Ltd in Honolulu. The caption on the back reads "Molten lava entering the sea at Kalapana Hawaii is a rare occurrence in Hawaii. This photograph has recorded a split second explosion caused by hot molten rock being super cooled in the sea water. The explosion's pyroclastic fragments are the material which washes back to shore to form the famous black sand beaches in the area." The photo was taken by Franco Salmoiraghi. It is unposted, with an undivided back, and in great condition. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to see additional photos. I will have several Hawaiian postcards up for bid and am happy to combine shipping if you see multiple lots you're interested in.
