Description: Hello and welcome to the House of Chrome. You are looking at a rare and unique 1930's era Universal model "BB" carbon microphone made in Inglewood, California. This was a very common design for it's time but was one of the larger, heavier sized models to be sold and it weighs about a pound but built like a tank. This classic style of microphone was made by several American companies before disappearing altogether around the mid 1940's. This was a general broadcasting microphone and was often used for singing. Pic # 2 shows this very "BB" model in an old 1933 Universal catalog I have with it's basic specs and price. If you plan on displaying this you'll need a specific style of ring with springs for your desk or floor stand in order to mount this piece. It has it's 4 original metal hooks that use springs to attach. It should be noted that the hooks are in perfect condition and none have ever been broken or fractured. When these early carbon spring mics were first sold these were almost always sold as kits where the buyer would have to assemble the mic itself. It wasn't until about the late 1920's that these were sold pre assembled. I believe Shure Brothers was the first to do so? Back in the 1920's your only choice of mics were that of Carbon and ribbon mics. The Carbon mics were pretty much phased out by the 1940's with a few exceptions. I should note that the mic has not been tested. It's 100% original but the working condition is unknown? Lets just assume it no longer works or is so weak it cannot be used reliably. These do hold up pretty well though so you just never know? This spring mic is in very good overall physical condition as seen in the pictures provided despite the lite physical wear. There is fine pitting on the chromed body but it's free of any dents or dings. There is a just a couple small spots of chrome loss as seen in pic # 6. Please let the detailed pics be your guide. It has all of it's original components including the screws. I would rate the physical overall condition a very conservative 7 on a scale of 1 -10. The actual BB Model body is 3 inches across (hook to hook 3 1/2 inches wide) X 2 inches deep. You'll need 8 springs to attach this mic to the ring. If you need a good prop piece this will be fine. Again, it may very well work but I don't know if it does? Will make a great paper weight if you don't plan on using this as it should. And as always... I can promise you will be happy with it for the price paid. If not...I have a no hassle return policy. The shipping will be on you as I believe that's fair but the purchase price would be refunded. Simply return in the same nice condition...period. Check my rating. International buyers are welcome as well. Buyer must pay within 24 hours or an unpaid case will be opened and item relisted. Domestic buyer will get priority shipping. If you have any questions feel free to ask and...thanks for looking.
