Description: Good morning all. Here is a vintage Stanley No. 5 bench plane, with a standard 2" wide iron and kind of cool blue japanning. "Made in USA" is cast into the body. The iron is stamped "Made in England". This plane a couple of generations after the classic Stanley Bailey bench planes. It is the same dimensions as a classic Stanley Bailey No. 5, but the design is different, so the body, the frog, and possibly the tote are NOT interchangeable. The classic Stanley Bailey has a machined surface on the body that mates with a machined surface on the bottom of the frog. This plane does NOT have a machined surface on either the body (8th picture) or the bottom of the frog (16th picture). If you are a purist doing fine cabinetwork, you have stopped looking at this listing, if you ever looked at it at all. However if you want a clean, serviceable No. 5 to use occasionally without having to worry too much about it, consider this plane. The iron is clean on both sides. I just hollow ground it on the Tormek (you are welcome), so it only needs a final honing. The plane has plenty of mass at over 3 pounds, 12 ounces. In terms of condition, PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: 1. There is a lot of scratching on the sole that you can see in the pictures, particularly in front of the mouth. Who can explain these things? However the mouth is fine, with no chips.2. The tote and the knob are plastic, not wood. Certainly the knob, and possibly the tote, can be replaced by wooden parts from a Stanley No. 5 or a Stanley No. 4 if you come across them. The plastic tote is at least ergonomically shaped. By this time Stanley had gone to blocky, uncomfortable wooden totes that you would want to replace immediately.
