Description: Traditional Wooden FROG mask used in Balinese FROG DANCE during Balinese traditional dance performances. In the west it would be used as decorative wall mask - but it has a slits for eyes and an adjustable strap so it can be worn as a mask. In Bali, Frog Dance is danced by a small child . So the mask is not large: 17 cm in diameter, sticks out from the wall by 9 cm. Hand-carved in Tegallalang, Bali, Indonesia. Fair trade. Carved from light wood, bright green with bulging frog eyes, articulated mount opening and slits for peeping out under the bulging frog eyes. Balinese FROG DANCE: Frog Dance depicts the movements and behavior of a frog, and reenacts a Balinese version of the familiar Fairy tale about the princess who marries a frog. The Story of the Frog Dance can be summed up as follow, a prince of Jenggala who was fond of catching dragonflies disappeared in a dense forest near an erupting volcano. A few years later a frog emerged which was believed to be the reincarnation of the lost prince. One day the prince-frog encountered a beautiful princess of Daha: he fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. Unable to fulfill this dream the frog committed itself to ascetic life, but by the blessing of the great God Wisnu, he was turned back into a handsome young man, the lost prince of Jenggala. Frog Dance is accompanied by a folk musical instrument called genggong whose sound is similar to Jew’s harp. All the masks are hand-carved and individually painted, so there may be some small difference in size or details between the one pictured and the one you will receive - although they will all be same colour, shape and roughly similar size.
