Description: This unique WW I doughboy helmet is adorned with a distinct skull and cross bones. Apparently, soldiers from the various armies would paint skull and cross bones on their helmets to intimidate the enemy. This M1917 Brodie helmet was used by the US American Expeditionary Force About 400,000 of these helmets were purchased from the British to equip the AEF in 1917. The US than made copies of the Mark 1, which were supplied at the end of 2017. The US version had better ballistic protection than the original.Unfortunately, I have no background history on this helmet. I bought it from a reputable militaria dealer many years ago.
